There are no doctors in Ponta D’Ouro. The nearest medical facility is over the border in South Africa – at Manguzi Hospital but there is now a pharmacy at the village square. We have left a few emergency 1st aid items at the cottage.

You can get basic foodstuffs in the village, as well as cool drinks, beer, booze and freshly baked bread – and there are a variety of restaurants to choose from. Do ask around!

What are the requirements for going through the border?

Ensure that you carry valid passports (two spare pages) and if travelling with children, their unabridged birth certificates and authorisation from parent(s) not travelling with them. Unsure of the rules? Then please click this link for latest information:-

The nearest border to Ponta d’Ouro is at Kozi Bay. Each passenger should present themselves on the RSA side of the border (driver being excepted) – advise the officials you are travelling INTO Ponta D’Ouro.

Walk across to the Mozambican side and have passports stamped there. This office is on the right hand side of the gate. Please check that each passport gets an entry stamp. There is nothing to pay if you are from a SADC country. However, all other countries must have a permit to visit, either issued in your city of Residence from the Mozambican Embassy, or can be issued at the border.

Driver of vehicle must take registration papers, letter of authority from bank (if under HP) or owner and report to the customs office on the left of the gate, to get a temporary import permit. Your boat, trailer, quad bikes etc. must be declared on this form. Then proceed to one of the INSURANCE provider outlets for Third Party Insurance. Third Party Insurance is currently

  • Vehicles: R150
  • Trailers: R80

If you are crossing the border into Mozambique at any other border, then please ensure that ALL passengers and driver present themselves at Immigration and ensure that your car has an emergency triangle and all other legal requirements. Please visit your nearest AA shop for full information.

All businesses and restaurants in Ponta D’Ouro take SA Rand as currency and there is no need to exchange.

Duty Free allowance on food is US$ 200/person free of duty charge.

Customs Regulation returning to SA:

  • No wooden items may be purchased in the markets and imported to SA. This is to prevent the spread of any borer, insects etc. they might still be imbedded in the wood as it is not treated.
  • There are fish regulations on importing so be careful as the SA police will request you open your fridges – check on regulations before you leave SA and Mozambique.

Can I take my boat?

Can I drive my saloon car to Ponta d’Ouro?

The “roads” on the Mozambican side of the border are currently just soft sand tracks. You will need a vehicle with high clearance and AT LEAST a diff lock – but otherwise 4×4. Also, the roads in the village are also very bumpy soft sand and if you want to explore the restaurants and villages further along the coast to Ponta Malongane and beyond, a 4×4 is essential.

There are a couple of companies that offer border transfers from Kozi Bay to the village and back and contact information can be found on this link:
